Shopping in Kos Town

The shopping district occupies the grid of pedestrian lanes between Eleftherias Square and the water — independent boutiques, jewellers, shoe shops and gift stores packed tightly together.

It is small enough to cover without a plan. A slow loop of the lanes will take you past nearly all of it, and the whole area is closed to traffic, so browsing is unhurried.

Kos Town concentrates its shopping into a handful of pedestrian streets behind the harbour, which makes browsing a matter of wandering rather than navigating. The area is small enough to cover in an afternoon and dense enough that you will pass most of it without trying.

Traditional Greek trading hours split the day. Many independent shops open in the morning, close through the hottest part of the afternoon, and reopen from early evening until late — so the liveliest hours for shopping are often after dinner rather than before lunch. Larger and more tourist-focused stores increasingly stay open straight through in high season, but the smaller ones generally do not.

For things actually made on Kos rather than imported, look for olive wood, ceramics, woven textiles, herbs, thyme honey and olive-oil soap. Olive wood is the local speciality: dense, close-grained and impossible to mass-produce identically, since the pattern comes from how the tree grew.
